At Family Water Treatment, our mission is clear: Be the most informative company in the industry while delivering the highest quality equipment at the best possible price.
We don’t believe that the sales process needs to be difficult or filled with pressure. We don’t believe that there are One-Size-Fits-All solutions either. Instead, we take the time to educate every customer so they can confidently choose the right solution for their family’s needs and budget.
Water treatment pricing isn’t random. It directly reflects:
- How much contamination you have in your water
- How much contamination you want to remove
- The technology required to remove the contamination.
To make this simple and transparent, we like to break down water into four categories.
The 4 Levels of Water Quality
- Unsafe Water – This is untreated water that poses immediate health risks. This is common in private wells and many developing countries. Municipal tap water in the United States almost never falls into the unsafe category.
- Safe/Legal Water – Municipal tap water almost always meets or exceeds EPA and state safety standards and is generally safe to drink and bathe in the short term. However, it still contains contamination. It typically has high levels of chlorine and other treatment chemicals, disinfection byproducts, PFAS, hardness, heavy metals, and other contaminants that can accumulate in the body over time and may negatively impact long-term health.
- Healthy Water – This is where most people see the biggest improvement. High-quality whole-home filtration equipment dramatically reduces contaminants such as hardness, chlorine, disinfection byproducts, and heavy metals. The result is better-tasting water that supports overall wellness.
- Premium Water – The highest levels of purity achievable. This requires additional, sometimes specialized, equipment capable of removing certain contaminants. Premium water is what many health-conscious families and those with specific needs aim to achieve.
How Our Pricing Connects to The Water Quality Levels
For most homes in Middle Tennessee that use tap water, a high-quality whole-home water filtration system that delivers healthy water typically falls in the $3,000 – $5,000 range, depending on the size of the equipment needed, features, and starting water quality.
These systems include premium components from top brands in the industry and deliver extremely high-quality water that generally falls into the Healthy Water (Level 3) category and often approaches the level of Premium Water (Level 4). Healthy Water levels are where about 70% of our customers fall when choosing equipment.
What impacts the price range?
- Specific contaminants in your water might require more/less equipment.
- System capacity/size for your water usage – Size of the home generally does not significantly impact the price. If you are asked only about the home’s size and not about plumbing size or daily water usage, you might be paying more just because you have a big house! Water quality, flow rates, and daily usage are far more important when determining the size/capacity of filtration systems. Bigger equipment is not always better. Equipment that is too large can negatively impact performance and efficiency.
- Brands can impact pricing. Several great equipment brands are available at varying prices. We recommend choosing a company and brand dedicated to water treatment that has a proven track record of delivering great work. At Family Water Treatment, we work with several brands such as AO Smith, Hague, Interflo, Aquasana as well as some equipment branded under our Family Water name.
- Installation requirements: 90% of homes in Middle Tennessee fall into the standard installation category. The standard installation category means we can install water treatment equipment without significant time or material. Some homes built on a slab foundation without an interior main water shut-off might require trenching in the yard from the main water meter to the home. Most slab homes built since the early 2000’s have a main water line with a shut-off valve available in a location like the garage or a utility closet, so trenching is unlikely.
Upgrading to Premium Water Quality
If your goal is to achieve Premium-level water quality, you need to ask yourself, “Where do I want my Premium Water?” Do you want Premium Water to be available for the entire home or just for drinking water?
- Drinking Water +$700 – $1,500 – Point of Use Reverse Osmosis (RO) systems for drinking and cooking water. This is the most popular and cost-effective way to achieve Premium water without treating every drop in the house. The most typical RO system is a standard multi-stage filtration system with a holding tank for treated water. These have been an industry standard for quite a while. Tankless RO systems are also available now. Most people appreciate that tankless systems take up significantly less room. Tankless ROs require electricity, whereas tank ROs do not. Potentially adding an electric plug under your sink might also impact pricing.
- Whole Home Ultra Filtration +$2,000 – $3,000 – These specialized systems go beyond standard whole-home filtration and remove higher levels of contamination or specific contaminants, such as PFAS, for the entire home. This popular option can deliver Premium-level water quality throughout the home. Typically, someone looking for extremely high water quality for bathing, showering, and drinking will choose an Ultra Filtration setup. This option is more economical than installing multiple point-of-use RO’s and significantly more economical than a whole-home RO system.
- Whole-Home Reverse Osmosis +$10,000 – $15,000 – I receive quote requests for whole-home reverse osmosis almost daily. It’s the ultimate solution for removing the highest levels of contaminants throughout the entire house. It is also the most expensive option! The upfront cost typically ranges from $10,000 to $15,000, depending on size and water demand. The ongoing cost is also something to be aware of, especially if you are on municipal water and pay a water bill. Believe it or not, whole-home RO systems can double your water bill. Generally, at this point, the homeowner is inquiring about better, more economical options. Whole Home Reverse Osmosis systems are most popular for commercial applications, saltwater wells, and those who desire the highest water quality achievable within their budget.

Hosting Thanksgiving or Friendsgiving this year? You’ve triple-checked the guest list, ironed the tablecloths, and prepped Grandma’s stuffing recipe, but have you considered the water coming out of your tap?
It might sound minor, but water quality can make or break the flavor of your food and drinks. From flat-tasting coffee to funky-tasting pasta water, poor water can quietly sabotage your best dishes.
Let’s break down how to protect the taste of your holiday table from the top down, starting with what’s in your glass (and your pot, and your stock…).
Why Water Quality Impacts Taste
Water isn’t just a background ingredient; it’s often the main ingredient. Whether you’re boiling, baking, or brewing, if your water tastes like a chemistry experiment, your food will too.
Common Offenders in Tap Water:
- Chlorine – Adds a pool-water aroma to soups, sauces, and drinks.
- Hard Water Minerals (like calcium and magnesium) – Can leave a bitter, metallic aftertaste and mess with your bread rise.
- Sediment or Rust – No one’s asking for a side of iron oxide with their green bean casserole.
Clean water enhances the natural flavors of your ingredients. Dirty water dulls them or worse, alters them entirely.
The Holiday Menu Breakdown: Where Water Plays a Role
Here’s where clean water really struts its stuff on the holiday table:
1. Coffee & Tea
Using tap water for your post-feast coffee? Don’t. Minerals and chlorine kill the flavor. Clean, filtered water lets your beans and leaves shine.
2. Soups & Stocks
From turkey bone broth to butternut squash bisque, water is the base. Better water = richer, cleaner taste.
3. Boiled Veggies & Pasta
Hard water can toughen your green beans and affect pasta texture. Yes, even macaroni deserves clean water.
4. Baking Bread or Rolls
Chlorine can interfere with yeast, making your bread less fluffy and more “meh.”
5. Cocktails & Ice Cubes
Ever had a cocktail that tasted like tap? Not on your watch. Filtered water makes crisp ice and clean mixers.
Your Secret Ingredient? Clean Water.
We won’t crash your party with a sales pitch, but we will say this: If your water tastes off, it’s not your cooking, it’s your tap.
